What Makes a Product Canadian?

A Canadian brand, a Canadian-made product, and a Canadian-owned company are not necessarily the same thing. Here’s how to understand the labels—and how CanuckFactor uses your buying priorities.

🍁 Product of Canada

Food: All or virtually all significant ingredients, processing and labour are Canadian. Minor imported ingredients may be permitted under applicable food-labelling guidance.

Non-food: The Competition Bureau’s general guidance includes a 98% threshold for Canadian direct production or manufacturing costs, together with other conditions.

🏭 Made in Canada

Food: The last substantial transformation happens in Canada. Imported ingredients can be used, and a qualifying statement such as “Made in Canada from domestic and imported ingredients” is required.

Non-food: The Competition Bureau’s general guidance includes a 51% threshold for Canadian direct production or manufacturing costs, last substantial transformation in Canada, and an appropriate qualifying statement.

Why the distinction matters

A product can be made in Canada by a foreign-owned company. A Canadian-owned company can also sell products manufactured abroad. Neither a Canadian barcode prefix nor a Canadian retail address proves where a particular product was made.

For example, a food product substantially transformed in Canada using imported ingredients may qualify for a Made in Canada claim without qualifying as Product of Canada. Exact packaging and product-specific evidence matter.

How CanuckFactor works

CanuckFactor does not assign a fixed Canadian score or certify products. You choose which Canadian connections matter to you: manufacturing, ownership and control, Canadian operations and jobs, and headquarters. We compare each selected priority against individually reviewed evidence.

  • Meets your criteria: All selected priorities have supporting reviewed evidence.
  • Some criteria met: At least one selected priority is supported, but not all are confirmed as supported.
  • Information unconfirmed: No selected priority is supported and one or more lack sufficient reviewed evidence.
  • Criteria not met: Reviewed evidence indicates no selected priority is supported and none remain unknown.

Evidence may be unknown or conflicting. Manufacturer declarations and AI-generated research leads do not, by themselves, establish verified facts. Previous CanuckScale points are legacy data and are not used to determine your personalized result.

How we research products

We use product-specific packaging information, manufacturer statements, government guidance, company records and other credible sources. AI may help locate evidence, but an AI suggestion is not itself proof or final administrator verification. When information is missing or contradictory, we identify the uncertainty rather than invent an answer.
